Ende der Social-Media-Ära: Wie Meta sich neu erfinden will

Ende der Social-Media-Ära: Wie Meta sich neu erfinden will

Was ist

Binnen einer Woche wurde Meta ordentlich durchgeschüttelt:

Wie Facebook TikTok kopiert

One of the most requested features for Facebook is to make sure people don't miss friends' posts. So today we're launching a Feeds tab where you can see posts from your friends, groups, Pages and more separately in chronological order. The app will still open to a personalized feed on the Home tab, where our discovery engine will recommend the content we think you'll care most about. But the Feeds tab will give you a way to customize and control your experience further.

One primary rationale that Meta used to give for poor integrity experiences was that the feed was just content from entities you chose to follow. You had the control so it was essentially your problem. That justification doesn't work anymore.

Wie Instagram TikTok kopiert

Warum Meta großes Risiko geht

Make Instagram Instagram again. (Stop trying to be TikTok I just want to see cute photos of my friends.) Sincerely, everyone.

Mosseri is saying that it doesn’t matter what you want. It is what Zuck wants. As a result, Instagram is now all about video, video, and video. And that isn’t going to change. Mosseri is saying that you might love photos, but Instagrammers, you can go pound sand. You and your photos are going to live with little or no attention. And while you are processing that bad news, let me tell you (on behalf of my boss) — your friends, social relationships, and your communities are dead – now you exist solely in the obeisance of the algorithms.

It's tempting to think that if Instagram simply reverted to a previous design or reinstated a chronological feed, that would somehow bring us closer to the people we care about. But we don't forge personal connections by sharing or commenting on highly personal public-facing photos that are permanently displayed on a grid anymore. These days, intimacy is fostered through features like DMs, group chats, or ephemeral posts to Close Friends.

Was Metas neue Strategie bedeutet

Mark last week as the end of the social networking era, which began with the rise of Friendster in 2003, shaped two decades of internet growth, and now closes with Facebook's rollout of a sweeping TikTok-like redesign.

Warum Metas Umsatz sinkt

By attacking this deal in a 3-2 vote, the FTC is sending a chilling message to anyone who wishes to innovate in VR. We are confident that our acquisition of Within will be good for people, developers and the VR space.

The FTC could lose this challenge, and it is a risky legal move to go after an acquisition like this. But whether the commission prevails is far less important than the cultural change among enforcers that is happening. Turning on enforcement isn’t like flicking a switch, it takes time, patience, a willingness to contest over bureaucratic turf, and institutional changes. But the change is starting to gather momentum.

Be smart

"It’s always journalism that gets sacrificed on the altar of video metrics fakery and BS", schreibt Aram Zucker-Scharff in einem langen und lesenswerten Thread, den das Nieman Lab dankenswerterweise übersichtlich aufbereitet hat.
